MCAS Notice from the School Principal and Guidance Office:

Dear Parents,

MCAS testing for both seventh and eighth grade students starts in the early spring.  This year the English Language Arts Test is schedule to begin on March 20, 2012, and Mathematics will follow on May 7, 2012.  Grade eight students will also participate in the Science and Technology/Engineering (STE) during the May session.  With holidays and school vacations, these dates will be here before we know it!

Parents and guardians can easily access the Massachusetts Department of Education’s website to learn about the MCAS and to help support their child in best preparing for the rigors of this assessment.  This website can be accessed atwww.mcas@doe.mass.edu  and once there, links to the Overview of the MCAS program, Actual Test Questions, Student Work /Scoring Guides, Graduation Requirements, an explanation of the Growth Model, as well as information regarding MCAS ALT. and MEPA are just a click away.

MCAS-related internet sites are varied and numerous.  These websites may be designed to inform parents or to target a certain grade level, while others may be modeled to support students from specific schools in a Massachusetts community.  Some tutorials or MCAS-related games are free to download; however, others are there for purchase.  A free informative guide for parents is available from The Massachusetts Statewide Parent Information & Resource Center (PIRC).  This information is provided in English, Spanish and Portuguese.  Parents Place Pointers brochure, Helping Your Child Prepare for MCAS, can be access at: www.pplace.org/publications/pointers/English/pppmcas.pdf   This, user-friendly guide for parents and guardians, is complete with strategies and tips to lessen test anxiety and improve performance.  We, here at Lakeview, are your partners in education.  Our mutual goal is your student’s success and well-being.

Principal’s Welcome

On behalf of the faculty and support staff, welcome to the Lakeview Junior High School Website. As the lone junior high school in Dracut, we serve approximately 700 students in grades 7 and 8.  Students complete year-long courses in English Language Arts, Mathematics (Pre-algebra or Algebra), Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language (French or Spanish), and Physical Education in addition to sampling exploratory classes in Art, Music, Health, Computers, and Family and Consumer Science.  Many Lakeview students also participate in our band, strings, and chorus offerings to complete their school day. Additionally, we offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities that include sports, academic clubs, interest/hobby activities, drama productions, and academic support sessions.

The junior high school years are critical to the personal development of your student and the staff at Lakeview takes our role very seriously.  Students, teachers, administrators and other staff are empowered to make decisions in a supportive atmosphere of mutual respect and acceptance.  Due to the competitive nature of our educational, vocational and occupational systems, the students we serve need to be thoroughly prepared for the challenges of high school in order to have the opportunity to experience success and achieve their goals.  We can assure you that our staff works diligently daily to effectively prepare our students for academic rigor and the skills needed to be productive members of the Dracut Community.  The facilitation of the personal development of your student is at the heart of what we do at Lakeview.

Lakeview encourages active learning for all of our students and faculty.  Faculty members are role models and mentors for students to inspire a love of learning and the philosophy that this is a lifelong process.  The intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and moral development of our 12 to 14 year olds is a critical responsibility that drives our faculty’s actions.  Lakeview Junior High School balances high expectations and self-esteem, inclusion and individual learning styles and abilities; with the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of all members of the school community.

In order to reach our idealistic goals during these challenging economic times requires an abundance of creativity and hard work.  I am blessed with a tremendous faculty who I believe can make the Lakeview vision a reality for our students.  The parents and community members I have met with thus far are superior in their support of the Lakeview Community.  The African Proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” is something we should all keep in mind as we facilitate the personal growth of OUR STUDENTS.  Any great organization is driven by teamwork; working together OUR STUDENTS will succeed.

Please contact me at 978-957-3330 or rfitzgerald@dracutpublicschools.net if I can be of any assistance to you.  Thank you in advance for both your support and the interest you have vested in the Lakeview Community.

Dr. Robert P. Fitzgerald Jr., Principal
